The Water Polo Club Stepp Praha was founded on February 10, 1992 by Mr. Jaromír Reitinger who has been the president of the club ever since. The first presidency of the club also consisted of Tomáš Růžička, Nikola Reitingerová, Tomáš Hlinka a Roman Zachoval.

Stepp Praha is the successor to the club Tesla Žižkov and at the time of its foundation it was one of the three water polo clubs in Prague (USK Praha and IPS Slavia Praha being the other two). In its first season in 1991/1992 only the men’s team participated in an official competition and was stary_steppplaced fourth in the Czech national league. After the split of Czechoslovakia in 1993, the men’s team played in the second division until it was promoted to the first division in 1999. After two seasons among the top teams, Stepp Praha was relegated back to the second division in 2001. Although the team took part in the first division promotion playoffs every year, it managed to return to the elite competition only in 2005 due to the arrival of several quality players. Already in the first season in 2005/2006 Stepp Praha reached a very good and surprising fourth place. The next four seasons were even more successful with Stepp Praha winning silver medals every year. One of the high points of Stepp Praha’s brief history was the participation in the prestigious European water polo club competition LEN Trophy in 2007. In October of that year Stepp Praha’s men’s team took part in the qualification tournament in Pécs, Hungary where it played historic games against PVSK Füszért Pécs (HUN), Dynamo Moscow (RUS) and Niš (SRB).

Besides taking part in the first division, the men’s team has also participated in the Czech National Cup. In 2009, Stepp Praha was the champion while in 2007 and 2009 it qualified to play in the Czechoslovak Cup, an international competition for the best Slovak and Czech teams.pohar

The women’s team was launched in 1994. At the outset, most of the players came from the dissolved club USK Praha. In the first two seasons the women’s team won bronze medals in the national championships. In 2004, after several years of mediocre results, came the greatest success of the women’s team: winning of silver medals. After this breakthrough, the women’s team has won several more medals in the national championships. Since 2010, Stepp Praha has two women’s teams of similar quality – Stepp A and Stepp M.

Our women have also been regular participants in the Czechoslovak Cup where the biggest success was a third place in 2009.

holkyIn 1997, the club started working with age groups and in 1998 Stepp Praha joined competitions for boys and girls. The result of this work is a number of players who have played for the national team.

Besides the achievements of the club’s different teams, it is worth mentioning that the Czech Water Polo Federation has awarded individual prizes in the category “The Best Seven of the Season” to several of our players. In the history of Stepp Praha the recipients of this award have been Konstantin Chernov, Viktor Margita, Štěpán Rezek, Tomáš Petr, and Martin Januš in the men’s category, and Barbora Půčková, Barbora Procházková, Michaela Růžičková, Lenka Vopálková, and Kristýna Pilná in the women’s category.
